Gospel Hope for Postpartum Mamas -- It's for us
There’s nothing like having something applied specifically to us. Something written for us that hits in that raw, chaotic space where we live and breathe.
If you’re reading this, I trust that we are cut from the same cloth, that we have similar limitations, that one day we were riding the euphoria of bringing a baby into this world and seemingly the next we ran headfirst into the worst version of ourselves. Some call it rock bottom. Others refer to it as the trenches, especially when there are multiple young’ns involved. It’s the moment we become quiet, delete our social media apps and roll our eyes at the mothers in the church hall. Either someone’s been lying to us about motherhood or we're alone in this struggle.
No one’s lying.
When I share my life and probe others, I find many of us have had this experience. The tears on the floor. The bad attitude that sticks to your face like someone else’s gum. I mean, it’s disgusting right? Like… who the heck am I? What is all this sin all over me?! We’re tempted to think our kids are the problem but deep down we know it’s us. Whether it’s sin or hormones or lack of sleep or vitamin deficiencies—-we know the person, the heart, the mind, the body to address is us.
No, we are not alone in this struggle, but there aren’t many resources out there that attack this season head on. Wait, let me phrase that better.
When looking for content to encourage us to persevere in Christian faith, we don't find much that speaks specifically to this season. Sure, many blogs and podcasts and books talk about the hard days of mothering, but with postpartum depression, rage, anxiety—-well, doesn’t “hard” sound like an understatement? Does their hope-filled content apply to us?
